Love Interior Decorating? Then Why Not Get An Interior Design Job?
Tagged Under : Decorating, Interior Design
If you love interior decorating then an interior design job may be just what you are looking for. Often there is no better feeling than waking up into a home which looks professionally designed and which actually looks like a home. Interior designers get a great deal of comfort knowing that their creativity has helped another individual or family to enjoy their lives that little bit more! Also, it would give you the chance to have a well decorated home yourself. All it really needs is a little imagination!
How to Get Into the Interior Design Field
If you have been wondering how you could get into the interior design field then your first step should really be to research the education options within your area. Now, whilst you may have imagination and you may have the talent, nobody is going to hire you without any qualifications. It would be too much of a risk and not many people are too trusting these days. You need to be able to show what you can do and in order to do that you need to first get a qualification in interior design.
Once you have completed a college or university course, you can then focus on building up a portfolio. This is important if you want to show what you can do. Maybe if nobody will give you a chance, you could practice on friends and family? Usually friends and family are more than happy for you to redecorate one of their rooms and if they are happy with the result they may even let you loose on the whole house! In order to create a good portfolio you should take a picture of the room before you made it over and then take a picture afterwards. That way it gives people an idea of what you can do and it proves you know exactly what you are doing.
Working For A Company or Going it alone
When you first get into the interior design field, you will often find that you end up working for a company first. Whilst you may go into training and education imagining being alone and working for yourself, often it is just not that easy and you will need to work for a company before you can branch out. Working for a company will teach you new things and once you have enough experience you can then branch out on your own.
Remember that it will take some money to set the business up and also remember that all important profile too! It can take a while to build up a profile but you can do it if you really want to.

Take a look at this:

It has loads of other jobs on here too so you can look at them if your not sure about interior designer.
Look for jobs at places like furniture stores or someplace where they need 'home' displays set up. This can give you a quick lesson in what's hot and how to arrange things. Or, you may be able to find a local company that would let you do an internship type thing. Look up Interior Design (or Interior Decoration) in your local yellow pages and start calling to see if any of them have entry level openings.
Your best bet, though, is probably to check out a degree program. I work at a school where you can do an Interior Design program in 18 months. Check out programs at your closest Art Institute – http://www.artinstitutes.edu
I'm not just advertising for my school…..I'm sure there are plenty of other programs…..just search for 'interior design degree' or something similar.
Speak to builders in your area about possibly doing this. Have some professional photos taken of the interior of your home in case they ask for examples of your work. (Make sure everything is spotless for the photo session of course.)
Sheffield is good, but all of them are beginner courses. In my view Rhodec Int. is the best, but it is also pricey.
You should make little models of rooms in different designs that you like, all it takes is a cardboard box, or something similar and some imagination, let me know how it all works out…
You're 18, if possible enroll in a college level math & drafting for starters. Hire on at something like a cabinet shop or decorating business. Start off small. Reception, general labor or such, pay attention. Work hard, prove yourself to the company that you're a good worker and devoted. Then you may take baby steps forwards.
My sister did this. She began as a receptionist for a tile company, then graduated to sales and service, more individualized care with clients, then she began designing interior tile layout, then for larger and larger homes, businesses, hotels etc… Soon she was so successful she split off and opened her own cabinet factory and Kitchen design etc…
I'll give you her website so you can get an idea of just how successful the business area is, and she had it all by the age of 28 or so.
My sister is the ultimate success story in this area. You could try and leave her an email with your Question, but I cant guarantee she'll have time to answer. Shes very very busy. Good luck I hope you make it where u wanna go!! God Bless You

If you are doing a presentation, or an actual room? Somehow, I'm thinking you are doing a presentation. You'll need to draw your room to scale on graph paper, including windows, doors, closets, height of ceiling, etc. You should include elecrical outlets, AC/heat vents, etc.
You'll need to make sure your furniture fits into the space. You should draw it to scale on the graph paper. Provide pictures of the furnishings. Have samples of fabrics, paint color, wallpaper, floor coverings, etc. Most designers have everything attached to a big board, and they have it labeled. Don't forget architectural details such as crown moldings, baseboards, etc. If there is a different paint color or finish, you'll need to indicate this.
Mark on the graph paper where accessories will be placed and provide photos or pictures.
I've seen this type of presentation rendered on HGTV. I'm sure you could find some good tips on their website.
Good luck with your project.
Choose the field that you almost interested. The interior decorating design also have a better future. Good Lucks.
