People that have children or younger relatives are quite familiar with buying toys for Christmas. They spend their Christmas season looking for blocks and children’s character toys. We have the same problem! My daughter gets so many toys, it seems like we are constantly cleaning out her toy box!
My husband and I both have very open relationships with our parents, and we just told them that she doesn't need any toys this year. She will, of course, get a few from Santa, but not many! We are lucky that her birthday is at the beginning of November, so clothes are a great option for gifts.
If your family asks what your kids need, just be honest and tell them! If they don't ask, I would suggest a phone call. It doesn't seem as impersonal. Just explain your situation, and they should understand!!
Toys for Tots is a nationwide toy drive every year. Also you could consider donating to your local Domestic Violence Agency, they are non-profit agencies and during the holiday season become overwhelmed with women and children. And most times leave with just the clothes on their backs. This would be a great place to consider. I can;t thank you enough! I'm in a desperate situation this year. I'm usually the one helping others and this year I can't even help make a Christmas for my girls. It's just a bad situation that I'm in and I have nothing at all and no money to buy anything. I'm staying with my sister and niece, unfortunately it's a long story but my niece is a very mean spirited and selfish 18 yo who has a dr. for a grandfather. When Christmas morning comes and there aren't any presents for my girls to open… I can't bear the thought of my girls sitting under 'our' tree on Christmas morning and watching their selfish cousin open expensive gifts and wondering why there isn't anything for them. All I do is cry and my heart is breaking. Thanks to your post I've contacted toys for tots and maybe, just maybe it isn't too late and they can help.
i just wanted to say thank you so much for caring. I've posted on places like craigslist asking for any used but good clothing or used game boy games, beaded necklaces… Not asking for new or for money. Just something, anything to wrap and put under our tree and the people were so very cruel. I feel humiliated enough and then after that I decided not to even mention to anyone anywhere again. It's hard to ask for help to begin with and mean, nasty posts really crush you. So thank you for being so caring and for wanting to help those of us who are having a bad time of it. I never had to ask for help before, but I have always given each year and now I'm in need and I didn't realize how mean some people can be.

I work in retail and people are still buying toys like crazy. Not me…if it's made in China, I'm not buying it. I already told my and my husband's family the same thing. I'm buying mostly snacks, juice boxes, books, and clothes. My daughter loves books anyway and would rather sit on a mountain of them and play than play with toys anyway.
